I'm Sven Woltmann – Java expert and founder of HappyCoders.eu. I've been at home in the Java world for 30 years, and I'm just as fascinated as on day one.
As a founder, CTO, and consultant, I've built and modernized systems for startups as well as companies like Amazon, 1&1, and IONOS.
Today, I share my knowledge as a trainer, speaker, and author of one of the largest German-language Java blogs, helping teams develop faster, more reliably, and with greater clarity.
30 Years of Java: backend architecture, performance & scalability
CTO & consultant: at companies such as 1&1, IONOS, ICE, and AndroidPIT
Trainer & Speaker: at Java User Groups and conferences like JavaLand

My Journey – From Amazon to HappyCoders
Three decades, two continents, one common thread: scalable Java systems used by millions.
1983 My first own computer
My first computer – a TI-99/4A. I typed in BASIC programs from magazines, understood them, modified them. Ever since, I've wanted to know what really happens inside software.
1994–1999 Computer Science studies at TU Ilmenau
Diplom-Informatiker with distinction (grade 1.2). Focus: algorithms and data structures and database systems – the foundation I still build on today.
1997–1999 Research and development at Amazon
As an intern and thesis student, I worked on data-driven decision-making processes – long before "Big Data" became a buzzword. My first hands-on encounter with scalability, handling millions of concurrent requests.
1999 First startup: language learning with Cleverlearn
As co-founder and CTO of Cleverlearn, I developed interactive language-learning software. My first company – and the realization that a product only counts when people actually use it.
1999–2000 Enterprise messaging at scale
At jfax.de, I developed messaging and enterprise features for one of the largest German internet portals of its time – right in the middle of the dotcom era. Heavy loads, tight deadlines, no second chances.
2000–2002 An internet product used by millions
With W+R Software GmbH, I built the GMX SMS Manager – one of the first paid online messaging services in Germany. Millions of users, millions of messages per day – real-world scaling.
2002–2004 Team lead after acquisition
After the acquisition by 1&1, I continued leading the Windows client team. For the first time, it wasn't just about code, but about people, processes, and how a team grows stronger together.
2004–2009 eleisure: Gaming platforms for hundreds of thousands
As founder and CTO of eleisure AG, I built online platforms and browser games – including GameAbo and Feenix – The Age of Pirates. My key takeaway from this era: good architecture only pays off when the team understands and can maintain it.
2009–2019 Ten years at AndroidPIT: from startup to brand
For ten years, I helped build and scale AndroidPIT technically – from a Berlin startup to an international tech publisher with millions of readers per month. Growing alongside it: the developer team I built up.
2019–2023 Scalable backends for the cloud
At IONOS, I worked on high-performance backend systems in the cloud. The focus: making systems faster and more robust – and enabling the team behind them to maintain that quality on their own.
Seit 2023 Scalability and performance as a discipline
At ICE, I focus on scalability and performance under real-world load. Large data volumes, demanding requirements, no excuses – exactly the kind of problems I most enjoy tackling.
Seit 2018 HappyCoders: sharing and teaching Java knowledge
With HappyCoders, I bundle my Java experience into articles, videos, and trainings. My goal: give Java teams the tools to use modern features effectively – so they can develop faster, write clearer code, and build more stable applications.
I believe that happy coders follow their passion, care about the needs of others, and stay curious for life.
I used to be the "nerd" who got picked last in PE class and would rather solve Rubik's cubes than play outside. Today, I'm a programmer by conviction, an entrepreneur, a speaker, and a happy husband and father of three.
On my journey – from hobby programmer, through my computer science studies, to more than two decades of professional experience – I've come across three principles that still shape me today. They flow into everything I do, whether at work or in my personal life.
Do what you love!
A programming career doesn't have to lead into management!
Find out what people really need!
Find out what people really need! Always look beyond what people say they want. Figure out what they actually need – and deliver it in top quality!
Invest in your skills!
Invest in your skills! Be a lifelong learner. Know your programming language, your IDE, your tools and frameworks, algorithms and data structures, patterns and principles.
Speaker by Passion
I've been sharing my knowledge for many years – through articles, videos, and talks. On HappyCoders.eu, one of the largest German-language Java blogs, I regularly publish in-depth articles on performance, architecture, and modern Java features.
I also speak at JUGs and conferences like JavaLand, and I take part in renowned unconferences such as JCrete, JChateau, and JAlba.
My talks are practical, easy to follow, and packed with "aha" moments that developers can put to use right away.
